Ultimate Predators of Africa Photo Safari 2019

Safari OverviewPhoto SafarisPrivate ToursPhoto HidesBook a Safari with Shem

Introduction

The origins of C4 Photo Safaris started with its two founders, Andre Cloeté and Shem Compion heading up into Africa in search of the great wildlife areas in Africa. Now, 12 years later we are still in search of the best Africa has to offer. This dedicated photo safari is unashamedly about locating the ultimate locations for each one of the large cats in Africa. These being cheetah, leopard and lion.. Our many thousands of hours traversing this continent in search of excellent wildlife photography has for this safari, been distilled into three distinct locations. These have been chosen to maximise the potential of each species, but also with exclusivity in mind. Don’t expect tourist hordes during this safari, we want you to enjoy the sightings at your leisure.

Andre and Shem have been ‘chasing’ wildlife since they can first remember. Both are acclaimed photographers who founded C4 Photo Safaris in order to share their love, knowledge and passion of Africa with clients. Our safaris are based on an exceptionally personable and high level of service delivered by  the best photo hosts in Africa. It has resulted in C4 Photo Safaris becoming one of the largest dedicated photographic safari operators in Africa. With Andre and Shem as your guides and hosts, you can expect to always be in the best photographic positions anticipating excellent predator action. Additionally, you will have help editing your images and as much tutoring help you can manage.

This safari is limited to only 6 participants. We will have two vehicles with three rows each at each location and one C4 guide on each vehicle. All flights, transfers and logistics are included in the cost of the safari. This safari combines seamless travel logistics, comfortable and luxurious accommodation and sensational wildlife. If you have ever wanted to head out in search of the ultimate image of each of the big cats, then this safari is the best opportunity you will have of achieving it. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our office or read further for more information.

Serengeti

The Southern Serengeti in July is a completely transformed place from the popular tourist impression of February and March, when the plains are teeming with calving wildebeest and zebra. In February and March the Wildebeest are dropping their gambolling calves on the phosphorous rich plains and the associated prides of lions and packs of hyenas are never very far behind.

The movement of the larger herbivores to other parts of the Serengeti / Mara ecosystem results in lions also moving out of the area to more permanent waterholes where larger prey items may still be found. So, you may ask, what is the attraction to the area in July? The vacuum created by the northward moving Wildebeest and Zebras as well as the absence of some larger predators creates an idyllic environment for Thompson’s and Grant’s Gazelles. These gazelles in turn attract the stars of the plains, and our reason for going there… Cheetah.

It is always dangerous to generalize in wildlife viewing and photography, but a day on these plains usually results in multiple cheetah sightings ranging from single animals, coalitions of males to females with cubs. The art comes in finding the right sighting with which to spend time with and then hopefully action photography will ensue.

Kusini Lodge nestled in the granite koppies and woodland provides the perfect place to explore this area from. Friendly staff, great food, stunning views and comfortable accommodation make the journey easy while the excellent guides hopefully find us our spotted subjects.

And the best part of the southern Serengeti… the solitude! There are very few other vehicles in this area in July creating an awesome sense of wilderness and great quality of sightings. This truly is the ultimate cheetah experience!

South Laungwa National Park

After Kusini we will head south to the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. South Luangwa is nestled deep within the rift valley of Zambia. It combines some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa in a setting as unique as its wildlife is diverse. South Luangwa, with the Muchinga escarpment on its western border and the Luangwa River to the east is a reserve that conjures up scenes of classic Africa. We will be staying at Kaingo Camp for your time spent in South Luangwa. This is leopard country. The landscape is perfect leopard habitat and the these months the vegetation has died away to make for some magical viewing. South Luangwa has one of the highest leopard densities in Africa and as such, these cats are beautifully habituated, allowing us to spend a lot of time with them, relaxed in our presence.

Over the last few years C4 Photo Safaris has run multiple photo safaris into this wonderful ecosystem that is the South Luangwa Valley. These safaris always produce magical sightings and experiences. With Shem Compion and Andre Cloete as your specialist photo guides, you will return with great big cat sightings and even better photographs.

Greater Kruger Park wilderness

Mala Mala Game Reserve lies strategically sandwiched between the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Wildtuin. The unfenced borders between Mala Mala and the Kruger National Park on one side, and the Sabi Sand Wildtuin on the other allow animals to migrate unhindered to the perennial Sand River which flows north to south through Mala Mala for 20 kilometres (13 miles). This river forms the lifeblood for wildlife in the dry season. And it is here that the lions and leopards find their prey. Mala Mala have incredible lion and leopard records. There is no other location in the Africa where the sightings of these cats are better. Mala Mala’s wildlife viewing statistics indicate how impressive the viewing is.

Here are some statistics about Mala Malas sightings:
In July, leopards and Lions were seen on each day, with a total of a 77 sightings each for the month of July 2017. On average, 76 different lion sightings were recorded each month of the year and they were only not seen on 8 days during the year 2016. In 2017, 1093 different sightings of leopard were recorded. The most leopards recorded in a single day were 16. Leopards were seen on 359 days of 2016. Over 22 years Mala Mala boasts a 96% strike rate for leopard across the year.

Having 4 days in this sought after reserve we will have ample time to work out the behaviour and movements of the cats, allowing us to anticipate and predict behaviour in order to get the ultimate photograph. It will also give us an intricate look into their lives and share intimate moments with these cats. This is quite different to what normal safaris are about and we intend to share these special moments with you as well as the high action ones. For us it is about the entire experience of safari life. Having this amount of time with lions and leopards will allow for exactly that. Accommodation will be at Rattrays camp in Mala Mala: Comfort and luxury will be quite exquisite.

All small plane flights will have extra freight seats booked for our party so you will not have luggage restrictions for these small plane flights.
